Rental scams usually follow a pattern. If you know it, you can walk away early. Here are the warning signs and the safe habits.

Warning signs

  • Money before a visit. Anyone who asks for a token, booking amount or advance before you have seen the place is a red flag.
  • A price that is too good. A flat far below the usual rent in the area is rarely real.
  • Pressure. "Many people are interested, pay now" is meant to stop you from thinking.
  • Photos that do not match. If the photos look like a catalogue, or you cannot get a video call of the place, be careful.
  • An owner who is "abroad" or "in the army". They cannot show you the place and want the money sent first.
  • Links and phone numbers in the listing. They often lead away from the platform to a payment page.

Safe habits

  • Always visit the place yourself, or send someone you trust.
  • Meet the owner or a verified representative, and ask to see proof of ownership or authority.
  • Pay only after you have signed an agreement, and pay by a traceable method.
  • Never share OTPs, card details or UPI PINs with anyone.

How RentEase tries to help

Listings on RentEase cannot contain phone numbers or links, and wording like "pay a token before the visit" is blocked. Emails and the owner's exact location stay hidden until both people choose to share. Anyone can report a listing, and several reports hide it while we review it. RentEase never asks you for money for a viewing.

If something feels wrong, trust that feeling and use the Report this listing link on the listing page.
